从熙宁七年十二月到任密州以来，这一个多月，苏轼过得紧张而焦虑。他上书丞相论密州蝗灾以及手实法之祸患，又上奏状请求减免税收。年底大雪，让他又喜又忧。转过年来的元宵，灯火冷淡，箫鼓入耳，又让他百感交集。他还不知下一步该怎样照拂一城百姓，更不知自己因为秉公直言而不得不离开京城、辗转州郡的人生旅途会折向何处，他一时恍惚起来，唯有回忆能暂时给他慰藉。我们切不可误会苏轼，说他好逸恶劳、喜奢厌俭。作为杭州通判和密州知州，他对两座城市抱有同样的责任与爱。在士大夫苏轼面前，它们是平等的；在诗人苏轼面前，它们的形象又是落差明显的。苏轼坦荡呈露落差，是审美本能使然，更是人生哲学使然——他想认真对待命运的变迁。此刻他还没有成为“东坡”（黄州始有东坡之号），但他已经意识到并开始处理后来苏东坡所要面对的重大人生问题：如何在命运面前保持主动？范仲淹曾号召说：“不以物喜，不以己悲。”可是谁能做到？怎样做到？
